The 2022 Cape Wrath Ultra is underway.

Day one (Sunday May 22) began with a ferry ride from Fort William to the start line at Trislaig, where a piper welcomed the runners, before they set off on the first leg of their eight-day, 400km journey to Cape Wrath lighthouse.

The first day was relatively short, with 37km of running and 500m of elevation on the way to the overnight camp at Glenfinnan.

Despite consistently wet and gloomy weather, spirits were high among the competitors, excited about getting started.

After a very strong start, Welshman Simon Roberts, winner of the 2021 Montane Dragon’s Back Race, was the fastest runner on the day. Fastest woman, and second overall, was Irish runner, Laura O’Driscoll, who had a big smile on her face as she came running towards the finish, looking as fresh as if she’d just gone for a light jog.

After day one of the 2022 Cape Wrath Ultra, the leading runners are:

Male

1st Simon Roberts (2 hours, 47 minutes, 48 seconds)

2nd Mick Tupman (2:59:50)

3rd Thomas Øderud (3:00:21)

Female

1st Laura O’Driscoll (2:59:48) – second overall

2nd Despina Berdeni (3:16:15)

3rd Vicky Savage (3:27:27).

Day two has begun, with over 54.1km with 1,559m of ascent from Glenfinna to Kinloch Hourn.
