Brora veteran Davie Beaumont, who fought in World War II and was taken prisoner following the battle of St Valéry 80 years ago, reached his centenary on May 28.

Sutherland Lord Lieutenant Dr Monica Main and members of the Royal British Legion Scotland visited Davie's home for an outdoors, socially-distanced ceremony to mark the occasion along with family and friends.

Dr Main made a toast; Major Alisdair Miller of the Golspie branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland, presented a special birthday card from Legion Scotland president Lieutenant General Sir Alistair Irwin; and gifts were handed over by RBLS Golspie branch chairman Donald Rowe and branch secretary Kenny McAulay. Piper Liam Mackay played Happy Birthday.

And the icing on the cake was special video message sent by television presenter Lorraine Kelly.

Mr McAulay said: "PoppyScotland and I contacted Lorraine to wish Davie a happy birthday and she was delighted to do so. Davie was over the moon.

"He thanked everyone for their kindness and he also wished the Legion a happy 100th birthday."

RBLS Scotland marked its 100th birthday last Friday.
