Warehouse extension could pose a risk
Sir – Re your article about the warehouse extension to the Glenmorangie warehouse in Brora (NT last week).
Three things came to mind:
I was reminded of the massive whisky warehouse fire at Cheapside, Glasgow, in 1960. It was one of the worst fires ever in the UK, with serious damage and loss of life.
With this in mind what are the health and safety implications for Brora from this site? Have these questions even been addressed? What precautions have been put in place? I think that this is especially pertinent as a housing estate and a school is in such very close proximity, as well as the A9 road.
To my mind this has the potential to be a massive bomb.
My second point is that as far as I am aware there has been no public consultation regarding this extension.
My third point is that as far as I can tell, this site does not bring any benefits to Brora as a community.
In fact I would suggest that this site is already a blight on the landscape. The architecture is not in keeping with a Highland village on a proposed tourist route.
Can anyone imagine this on the outskirts of the Cotswolds or York or even Tain? It raises the question has Brora become for some a dumping ground for projects which would not be accepted anywhere else.
Brora has enough eyesores to cope with (the derelict site where the West End Garage used to be, The Braes Hotel, and the the architecturally inappropriate Clynelish Distillery), without adding insult to injury.
My view is that Brora deserves better than this.
