Long serving volunteers throughout the north including Sutherland have been told just how much their efforts are appreciated.

Around 106 volunteers, each with 10 or more years service in various fields, were invited to afternoon tea at Strathpeffer pavilion and presented with certificates marking their work.

The event, the first of its kind, was organised by the Highland Third Sector Interface (HTSI) during Volunteers’ Week, which ran from June 1-7.

MSP John Finnie presented certificates to those present, who had a total of 2061 years’ service between them.

Thirteen Sutherland residents, nominated by Sutherland Community Partnership, received certificates - although not all managed to attend the event.

They were: Hayley Bangs, Kyle of Sutherland Hub; Kathleen Cunningham, Brighter Brora; Charlotte Gibson, Rogart Hall; Jim Johnston, Tongue and Farr Sports Association; Garry MacMillan, Helmsdale Lights; Monica MacLean, Rogart Primary; Iain Miller and Mary Nicol, both Golspie Community Council; Yvonne Ross, Dornoch and District Community Association; Anglela Sutherland, Lairg Community Centre; Sally Thomson, Bonar Bridge Community Hall; Graham Wild and Stuart McHugh, both North West Community bus Association.

Another four local volunteers who were also presented with certificates were Marion Sutherland, who was nominated by Highland Hospice and Peter Wild, Tony Rundle and John Banes, who were all nominated by Historylinks.

Voluntary Groups Sutherland manager Christine Ross paid tribute to the county’s volunteers.

She said: “Sutherland was very well represented, given the event was for volunteers throughout the whole of the Highlands. I think that we demonstrated our commitment and that volunteering is thriving.”
