Train enthusiasts are in for a treat with a steam train due to make a rare foray into East Sutherland next month.

Rail tour company Steam Dreams is organising a tour from Inverness to Dunrobin Castle station on Saturday, May 11.

The company was behind a very successful journey five years ago which saw the Cathedrals Explorer, pulling seven Pullman carriages, steam from London’s King’s Cross Station to Dunrobin

That tour was significant in that it was the furthest such journey north to be made since the war.

The May 11 tour is being hauled by the Flying Scotsman into Inverness but the engine is too heavy for use on the Far North line so will be replaced by the Mayflower.

Built in 1948 for the London and North Eastern Railway, the Mayflower is one of two surviving B1 class locomotives.

The train expected to leave Inverness at 9.15am for arrival at Dunrobin Castle at 1.35pm.

Daniel Brittain-Catlin looks after the Dunrobin Castle station, which is a request stop. He said: “The largely empty train will continue up to Brora so the engine can turn round.”

It will start its return journey from Brora at 3.25pm.
