Celebration of Centuries at Fort George to delight with historical re-enactors covering 2000 years of Highland history
Two thousand years worth of history are set to come to life at Fort George next week when Historic Scotland’s largest re-enactment event returns.
Fort George will once again play host to the ‘Celebration of the Centuries’ on Saturday and Sunday, August 10 and 11.
And all manner of historical periods are set to be celebrated - with the military fortress showcasing everything from the Picts, Romans and Vikings to medieval knights and World War II soldiers.
Re-enactors will give visitors the chance to immerse themselves in a living timeline of Scottish history, with a sporting take on the event being the theme this year - with games featuring iconic historical figures such as Mary Queen of Scots. This year also marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, with a presentation where visitors can hear about Fort George's role in the training for the top-secret preparations for the military plan.
With entertainment from jesters, living history camps to explore, and the chance to dance along to a big band with Swing Dancers in the 40s zone, organises are promising that “there really is something for everyone”.
Plus, author Barbara Henderson will be reading from her exciting historical novel, The Chessmen Thief.
Stephen Duncan, director of marketing and engagement at Historic Environment Scotland, said: “Celebration of the Centuries is one of our most spectacular summer events and we’re thrilled to be welcoming visitors to the iconic site of Fort George once again. No other event showcases such a breadth of Scotland’s history, offering a truly unique and exciting way to engage with our heritage.”
Celebration of the Centuries will take place at the fort from 11am to 5pm on the Saturday and Sunday.
Tickets can be bought in advance online at alittlehistory.scot/celebration and are free for Historic Scotland members.
A dedicated shuttle bus will also be in operation between the Inverness Airport railway station and Fort George between 9.30am to 5.30pm across the weekend.
