Highland Council are inviting parents and carers to consider enrolling their child for Gaelic Medium education.

Online enrolment for the next school session is now open and the council has reaffirmed its commitment to providing equal respect for English and Gaelic, with both languages playing an essential part in Highland life.

The bilingual option is open to all primary 1 children living within a Gaelic Medium catchment area, even if they did not attend a Gaelic Medium Nursery.

Gaelic chair, councillor Calum Munro said: “Languages are central to our cultural heritage and identity. The council recognises the educational, artistic, cultural, social and economic importance of Gaelic; Gaelic Medium education has been delivered in schools for over 35 years.

"Today, there are twenty Highland primary schools that provide Gaelic Medium education and this is essential to supporting our diverse and inclusive community.

"There are many benefits to bilingualism and I would encourage parents and carers to watch the very useful and informative video from the council which will help to explain these benefits in an engaging and helpful way.”

The video Fàs Foghlaim is available on the local authority's YouTube channel.

Children who will be five years of age on or before February 28, 2023 will be eligible to enrol for Primary 1. Early Learning and Childcare online enrolment will open on Monday, February 14, 2022.

To enrol your child, for further information on completing the online form, the enrolment process, catchment areas, Gaelic Medium education, school transport and placing requests, please visit www.highland.gov.uk/enrol.
