VE DAY 80: Special tribute from Golspie pupils at War Memorial commemoration





Young people in Golspie paid a special tribute at an event held at the village’s war memorial to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day yesterday, Thursday, May 8.

Pupils from Golspie Primary School laid a special handmade wreath, made up of hand-shaped cut-outs covered in red and with a black circle in the centre.

A number of other wreaths were also laid.

Sutherland Lord-Lieutenant Major General Patrick Marriott laid a wreath on behalf of the king; Royal British Legion Scotland branch chairman Major Alisdair Miller on behalf of the branch; Alan Bithell on behalf of Golspie Community Council; and Lynn Hignett on behalf of all nurses.

The VE Day 80 flag was raised at the end of the ceremony by RBLS Golspie branch secretary David Hignett.

Lynn Hignett laid a wreath on behalf of all nurses. Attached to the wreath was a quote from Edith Cavell, a British nurse, who working in German-occupied Belgium during World War I.
