People from Sutherland and Caithness as well as Orkney and Shetland are being invited to take part in a voice workshop exploring dialect, speech and movement.
The Kristin Linklater Voice Centre in Orkney is inviting local participants to take part in the paid-for course that explores dialect, speech and movement.
The workshop, Linklater into Phonetics: Feeling Sound, is being held at the centre from June 5-11 and provides a unique opportunity to experience the blend of the late Kristin Linklater's work of sound and movement alongside the speech work of expert Louis Colaianni.
Phonetics is a branch of linguistics that focuses on the production and classification of the world's speech sounds. The workshop helps people embody these phonetic sounds, as sound is not only heard but can be felt as well.
The workshop also includes aspects of the world-renowned voice work Kristin Linklater developed over a 50-year career of stage and academic teaching.
Peter Marciano, a designated Linklater teacher and certified Colaianni speech practitioner, from New York, is leading the workshop. Peter believes there is no such thing as a voice standard to achieve. “My ethic is to work non-prescriptively because in a time when diversity and inclusion are at the forefront of the arts, telling someone what is 'good speech' is not part of who I am. What I teach is in the framework of personal identity, alongside diversity.”
Yvonne Harcus, managing director of the centre, said: “The workshop is one of the few chances people outside of the USA have to experience this work in person. We wish to ensure that the centre welcomes a rich and diverse range of voices, and are blessed to be in a part of the world with distinctive dialects such as those found in the northern mainland and isles.
"An increasing focus for the centre is to provide accessible and affordable opportunities for people in this area and that is why the workshop is being offered at a significant discount for people to attend the full residential experience or, for those based in Orkney, the option of attending the workshop daily.”
The workshop requires no prior voice work or acting experience and is open anyone interested in exploring the capabilities of their voice. To find out more, or to express interest, please contact Yvonne at firstname.lastname@example.org
