Ullapool Nursery tots win competition to name new ‘beloved’ charity tadpole mascot
Ullapool Nursery tots have won a competition to name a new national tadpole charity mascot, which is believed to become a “beloved character”.
Pupils from Ullapool nursery won a competition to name a new mascot for The Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust (ARC) and Saving Scotland’s Amphibians and Reptiles (SSAARs) — Logsy an Losgann, roughly translating to Froggy the Frog.
The charities behind the mascot hope that it can become a gateway to learning, while linking with High Life Highland Ranger Service’s Puddles to Pond project.
Logsy an Losgann will star in an upcoming National Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust educational pack, centred around the wonders of freshwater ponds.
Janet Ullman of the SSAARs project said, "It was so hard to choose just one favourite from all the names that were sent in; there were so many imaginative and beautiful names. After a vote by ARC Trust staff, volunteers, trustees, and High Life Highland Rangers, Logsy emerged as the overall favourite. It was fantastic to see the number of schools that wanted to participate in the naming of our new character"
The nursery school pupils, whose creativity shined in their winning entry, celebrated with a special award ceremony at their school on June 17. The class received their own large Squishmallow cuddly frog (who is now also named Losgy by the class), twelve bug boxes with magnifiers and the ARC Trust storybook Old Uncle Blue.
To celebrate the launch of Losgy an Losgann SSAARs is planning a series of fun educational activities including interactive workshops, pond visits and storytelling sessions.
High Life Highland Ranger and Puddles to Pond project manager, Andy Summers said: “This collaboration has been a wonderful opportunity to engage our youngest learners with the natural world. Losgy an Losgann will undoubtedly become a beloved character, sparking curiosity and a lifelong passion for wildlife conservation among the children.”
