Wester Ross bricklayer Ryan Macpherson overtook an unmarked police car but then reached speeds of up to 90mph in the 60mph zone.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that the incident on the Dingwall to Ullapool road occurred on about 10am on September 9 last year and 40-year-old Macpherson of Rhue Road, Ullapool, admitted driving carelessly.

He was fined £420 and his driving licence was endorsed with four penalty points by Sheriff David Sutherland.

Defence solicitor John MacColl said: "Other than going a bit too fast, he didn't do much else wrong. It was a good stretch of road. He is self-employed and his driving licence is essential for him."
