TYKES' charity shop relocation

The Young Karers East Sutherland (TYKES) is opening a new charity shop in Golspie's Main Street.

The charity, which supports young carers, has taken over the former office of the Northern Times.

Dr Mary Fortune, who chairs TYKES' infrastructur group, said it was hoped to open at some point in May, but a lot of work had to be done before then to get the shop ready and make it Covid complaint.

"We have a huge amount of stuff in storage and we have got to think about the lay-out of the shop to make it customer friendly," said Dr Fortune. "It is not going to be crowded, but light and bright."

TYKES formerly ran a small charity shop in Duke Street, which not only provided an income stream but also an opportunity to offer young carers work experience.

"Duke Street was a bit out of the way," said Dr Fortune. "Although, having said that, the shop and volunteers did excellently in quite cramped conditions.

"This new shop is ideal for us and will be a nice place for the volunteers to work in. It is a great opportunity to attract more casual customers and it also means we can continue to give young carers work experience."

It is hoped the shop will open from Monday to Saturday.
