TWO new cases of the coronavirus have been detected across NHS Highland in the past day.

The region’s cumulative number of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic rose from 5022 to 5024 when the Scottish Government published the latest daily update on Wednesday.

Fewer than five people were having treatment for the virus in NHS Highland hospitals last night. The exact figure is not known, as the total is redacted if the number falls below five in order to protect patient anonymity.

There were 289 positive tests for Covid-19 across Scotland in the past 24 hours - or 1.5 per cent of all tests carried out.

Scotland’s hospitals were treating 192 people for the virus last night - down four from yesterday.

Twenty-one of those were in intensive care. This was unchanged from Tuesday’s update.

Sadly, five further deaths were recorded among people who previously tested positive for the virus.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were no new cases overnight in either NHS Shetland, NHS Orkney or NHS Eileanan Siar.

Twenty-two new infections were detected across NHS Grampian in the past day - taking its overall total to 14,519.

And NHS Tayside’s cumulative tally is 14,730 after it recorded a dozen positive tests in the past 24 hours.

There have been 220,782 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across Scotland since the start of the pandemic.

Almost 2.6 million Scottish adults have now had their first dose of the Covid vaccine, and nearly 480,000 have had their second jag.
