Walking and cycling initiative Golspie Bothy is holding a "come and try" event at Brora Hub from 10.30am to 2.30pm on Friday, October 15.

The event offers an opportunity to try out an e-bike and to learn more about the project and its programme of cycle rides and health walks.

The event is taking place on Friday, October 15.

A representative from Cycling Without Age Scotland's Wick group will be on hand to to demonstrate an e-rickshaw and chat with any individual or group representative interested in acquiring one for community use.

Golspie Bothy project coordinator Amanda Wagstaffe said: "E-rickshaws are great for getting those with balance or mobility difficulties outside in the fresh air. They could go as far as they would like in it."

She continued: "The basic idea is that anyone interested in a community rickshaw would join Cycling Without Age (CWA) before embarking on crowdfunding to meet the purchase costs.

"CWA would then provide training, support and insurance – a pool of volunteers would be trained to ride the rickshaw."

"If it was felt that it is was too much for just one group to organise, then perhaps two communities could have joint ownership of the rickshaw and agree set days or weeks when each could have it."

Ms Wagstaffe said that in other areas. e-rickshaws had been purchased by nursing homes and hospitals with volunteer riders turning up on agreed days to pick up residents or patients, who were sometimes accompanied by nurses or support workers.

Friday's event will also be attended, from 11.30am onwards, by Melanie Bell from Fourever Fitness who will talk to people about her new strength and balance classes.

Cycling UK, a national charity which promotes cycling and supports cyclists, worked in partnership with development group Go Golspie to establish Golspie Bothy.

Funding to pay for start-up costs and to purchase bikes come from Smarter Choices, Smarter Places and the Energy Saving Trust.
