Tributes posted for north man killed in A99 crash

ONLINE tributes have been posted on social media to the man who died following a road crash at Freswick on Sunday.

Police Scotland confirmed the identity of the 32-year-old man as Garry Aikman, from Wick.

The crash happened around 4pm on the A99 at the Freswick Bridge and involved a grey Vauxhall Vectra.

Mr Aikman's family released the following statement through Police Scotland: “The whole family is devastated by the tragic loss of Garry.

"He was a much loved grandson, son, brother, father and nephew.

"His loss will be sorely felt by us all and we are still in shock. We would ask that we are given privacy to come to terms with what has happened.”

On the Highlands and Islands Police Division page on Facebook, tributes were posted by those who knew Mr Aikman and others who were shocked by the incident.

Lynsey Reid wrote: "So saddened to read this. I grew up in primary school with him and have many random fond memories as young kids. I'm sure he has left a big hole in the hearts of those close to him that he has left behind."

Ruth Henderson said: "In absolute shock reading this tonight, Gary you will be missed by so many and you definitely have left loads of lasting memories with people you have been around. Thoughts go out to his family, friends and kids at such a devastating time... R.I.P Gary."

Annemarie Simpson wrote: "Thoughts with all families involved and all services who attended such an awful accident."

Nadeem Sarwar said: "Terrible tragedy. Thoughts and prayers to the injured. RIP."

Shonaid Henderson wrote: "He was a lovely lad, sending my condolences to you all at this sad time R.I.P."

Paula Elizabeth Newlands posted: "Just can’t seem to put my mind at rest about this. All I can do now is remember our days from school, all our good days and memories. I will miss you so much."

Over 150 tribute comments were posted on the police Facebook page and the post was shared almost 200 times.

On Sunday, emergency services attended the scene of the crash at Freswick Bridge and Mr Aikman was taken to Caithness General Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said yesterday: "A 26-year-old woman and a three-month-old baby girl were taken to Caithness General Hospital with serious injuries. A three-year-old girl and two boys, aged six and eight, were also taken to hospital with minor injuries. All were later transferred to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary."

Highlands and Islands road policing sergeant Kate Park said: "Our thoughts are with Garry’s family at this time. We are continuing with enquiries to establish the full circumstances of the crash.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact the Road Policing Unit based at Dingwall through 101, quoting incident number 2370 of Sunday, September 6.”
