Tribute has been paid to former Golspie High School rector David Whyte, who died last night.

Mr Whyte, who was in his eighties, moved from Golspie some two years ago to Dunfermline to be closer to family members.

He was a founder member of East Sutherland Rotary Club as well as being active in the community and the Church.

His many friends in East Sutherland have been saddened to learn of David Whyte's death.

But his real claim to fame lay on the rugby field and he was a Scottish rugby internationalist in his youth.

Alistair Risk, of the Rotary club, said: “David was a man of many talents. He was the head master at Golspie High School and a stalwart of the Church and the community.

“He was a real gentleman and the “Mr Dependable” in the Rotary Club of East Sutherland.

“My first memories of him were leaving the England rugby players in his wake as he sprinted over the line to score for Scotland at Murrayfield.

“He was also a British Lion and during our last conversations he spoke knowledgeably about the current crop of players and past team mates from an era when rugby was an amateur sport.”
