Pupils in the North West Sutherland Schools Group have been inspired by a visit from an Olympic athlete.

Hammer thrower Chris Bennett, from Aberdeen, visited the Kinlochbervie campus under the Sports for Champions initiative, which brings world-class athletes face-to-face with young people to motivate them.

Mr Bennett represented Scotland at the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games and competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics

A spokesman for the schools group said: "Chris met with the pupils in small groups from nursery to senior high school pupils and set them a fun gym circuit to take part in.

"He then met all the pupils and staff as one during a 45-minute assembly in which he spoke to and took questions from his audience.

"The pupils were very engaged and learned a lot about Chris’s journey and the difficulties he had to overcome to reach a top level in his sport.

"He spoke about the need for a healthy lifestyle and good mental mindset, as well as resilience and a positive attitude, to achieve goals in life."
