Ten Highland drivers arrested for drink and drug driving

Highland and Islands officers carried out road safety patrols and vehicle checks over the course of the weekend, resulting in a number of detections.

A 20-year-old man was charged in connection with dangerous driving at Eastfield Way Retail Park in Inverness.

Ten drink drivers and four drug drivers were arrested by officers in various locations including Inverness, Dingwall, Alness, Benbecula, Lerwick, Kirkwall, Aviemore, Easter Ross, Lochaber and Wester Ross.

A 26-year-old man was also charged in connection with a road traffic offence after being detected driving at 118 mph on the A9 at Alvie in Badenoch.

A further 10 offences, including speeding, no MOT and mobile phone use, were also detected and persons charged.

Inspector Donnie Mackinnon from the Highland and Islands road policing unit said: “These patrols demonstrate that we are targeting those who represent the greatest risk to road and community safety.

"It is very disappointing to see drivers making poor choices which adversely impact themselves, their families and our Highland and Islands communities.

“I can assure the public that we have road safety patrols plans in place for the coming months and will continue to take robust enforcement action against those who take risks and put themselves and others in danger.

"The summer months bring increased volume of traffic so please drive safely and be aware of road users who may be unfamiliar with the road network."
