A recruitment drive is being launched by the Sutherland Federation committee of the SWRI in an attempt to encourage more women to join.

A spokeswoman says: “The ‘Rural’ is a membership organisation promoting personal benefit for its members by encouraging education, friendship and Scottish culture. There are Institutes in many villages and towns, each belonging to their county Federation.

“The headquarters office is in Edinburgh, but information is quickly disseminated both to it and from it so that all members can feel that they are part of the country-wide organisation.

“There is a voluntary Federation committee in Sutherland with eight active Institutes in Assynt, Brora, Clashmore, Dornoch, Golspie, Helmsdale and District, Rogart and Rosehall.

“Meetings are held each month in the Institutes with a wide variety of speakers and activities to be enjoyed, from craft to travel or gardening to cooking to walking. There is always time for a good blether over a cup of tea in the company of local friends.

“Often there are open nights when anyone in the community is invited to come along and join in a particularly relevant activity – it might be a slide show or travel talk, but whatever it may be, there will always be good refreshments laid on for visitors!”

The Federation have organised a Coffee Morning in the West Church Hall, Dornoch, on Saturday 5 November, and asks anyone who would like to learn more about SWRI to go along and chat to those who already enjoy what “The Rural” has to offer.
