THE mercury plummeted to almost -8.5C in parts of Sutherland last night – as Scotland recorded is coldest April temperature for eight years.

The temperature fell to a chilly -8.3C in Lairg this morning, and to -8C exactly in Kinbrace, according to figures from Highlands and Islands Weather (@highlandweather on Twitter, and Highlands and Islands Weather on Facebook).

This was only slightly warmer than in the Tulloch Bridge/Fersit area of Lochaber, where the Met Office recorded a low of -9.4C – Scotland’s lowest official April temperature since 2013.

Clear skies and still air ensured that temperatures fell well below freezing quite widely in the Highlands last night.

The Drumochter Pass saw the mercury bottom out at -8.8C, while Nethy Bridge hit -8.4C and Aultguish at Loch Glascarnoch in Ross-shire fell to -8.3C.

And, with further clear skies and still nights forecast, further chilly temperatures are expected this week.
