Sutherland’s Marty Mackay Memorial Cycle and Walk 2024 raises £10.6k for cancer charities

The Marty Mackay Memorial Cycle and Walk 2024 has raised an amazing £10,642 for cancer charities, organisers have announced.

The event has been held annually since 2011, with the exception of the Covid years, in memory of Durness man Marty Mackay and has raised a total of £189,311 to date.

The weather for the 2024 Marty Mackay Memorial Cycle and Walk was probably the worst in the event’s history but it didn’t put off participants.
The weather for the 2024 Marty Mackay Memorial Cycle and Walk was probably the worst in the event’s history but it didn’t put off participants.

It involves a 57-mile cycle ride from Lairg to Durness and a 15-mile walk from Rhiconich to Durness. Participants then gather at Durness Hall for a social event and fundraising auction.

Some 34 cyclists and 33 walkers took part in this year’s event on April 13, in what was probably the worst weather in the event’s history.

Marty’s mother, Mary Mackay, said: “The weather was probably the worst ever, but that didn’t deter participants, although one chap cycling on a penny farthing was so exhausted by the time he reached the village hall that he donated it to the auction where it raised a lot of money!”

Mrs Mackay added that the hundreds of thousands of pounds raised so far was a “fitting tribute to Marty”.

She continued: “The annual event has become a fixture on many calendars, and the organisers will soon be announcing the date for the 2025 event, so we look forward to welcoming you all again and if you haven’t taken part before, dust off your bike or your walking shoes and come and join the fun.”
