Changes to Highland Council parking conditions at a Sutherland beach have led to the banning of campervans or motorhomes.

The new regulations, which come into effect today (May 30) at Dornoch beach car park, have also resulted in a non-compulsory invitation to pay scheme for cars and motorcycles.

The income from the scheme is expected to pay for regular visits from parking enforcement officers.

A new clause added to the restrictions upon use states that "vehicles manufactured for or adapted for the purpose of sleeping", such as campervans and motorhomes, is prohibited.

Dornoch Area community council confirmed that these types of vehicles will still be allowed to use the playpark and overflow car parks during the day, but not overnight.

A spokesperson for the community council said: "It is hoped that along with the new passing places created over the winter, these changes will reduce congestion in the top car park and improve the experience at the Beach, making it safer for everyone to enjoy.

"Many thanks to the various Highland Council departments we worked with to make this happen.

"The final piece of the jigsaw will hopefully be new road signs to warn long vehicles of the limited turning and no parking available for them before they enter the car park, as they approach the junction between Golf Road and Beach Road.

"However, given this is part of the public highway, there is still more work to do to get this in place."
