Sutherland Agricultural Show has been cancelled for the second year running because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The committee that organises the premier event, which was due to be held on Dornoch Links on July 24, said it had this week made the “difficult decision” to call it off.

Sutherland Agricultural Show has been held annually for nearly 70 years but had to be called off in 2020 and will not be held again this year.

Up until now it had been hoped that the show would go ahead in the light of good progress with the country’s Covid-19 vaccination programme.

But the committee took the view after discussion that even with the easing of lockdown restrictions, it would be inappropriate to encourage a large gathering this summer.

Show president Ewan Cameron said: “It has been very hard to reach this conclusion, but we have to take into consideration the ongoing health, safety and wellbeing of all those involved in the show.

“I know this will be disappointing news for the community but the show organisers hope that everyone understands and supports this decision.”

He added: “We remain positive that there will be a show next year and look forward to welcoming everyone back to the showground in July 2022.”
