A SCHEME to encourage recognition and additional support for people with hidden disabilities has been welcomed by a local councillor.

Moray Council, along with many other firms and individuals across the country, have swung their support behind the Hidden Disability Sunflower initiative.

People who are sporting green lanyards or wristbands with sunflowers on them are identifying themselves as having a hidden disability. These are conditions which do not have physical signs, such as learning difficulties, mental health as well as mobility, speech, visual or hearing impairments. They can also include asthma, COPD and other lung conditions as well as chronic illnesses such as traumatic brain injury, renal failure and diabetes – diseases that can significantly impact day-to-day life.

Living with these conditions can make daily life more demanding for many people. They affect each person in different ways and can be painful, exhausting, and isolating.

All anyone wearing the green with sunflower lanyard, wristband, badge or pin is asking for is others to be understanding – they might need a little more time, some help or assistance.

One of those enthusiastically backing the sunflower scheme in Buckie councillor Sonya Warren, who is herself a diabetic.

She said: "This is a wonderful initiative and I'm delighted to see the council supporting it.

"Just because you don't show any obvious signs of illness or disability it doesn't mean someone isn't struggling with a condition which has a huge impact on their life.

"Hopefully the sunflower scheme will help alert people to this and allow them to give that little bit more help and understanding which can make such a huge difference."
