Success for Dornoch schools in STEM challenge

Both Dornoch Academy and Dornoch Primary School have scooped top prizes at the Annual Highlands and Islands Showcase for SCDI’s Young Engineers and Science Clubs at Eden Court Theatre, Inverness.

Pupils from 23 schools across the region showcased their achievements in science and engineering and took part in three-minute STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) problems set by local companies. Both schools came out with top marks in the STEM Challenge and each won a trophy.

The event, coinciding with National Science and Engineering Week, attracted over 200 participants as well as a range of local companies who ran hands-on challenges.

Examples of the projects on display include marine energy devices developed by Millbank Primary and Grantown Grammar School, electronics projects including light-up crowns for the Diamond Jubilee from Dornoch Primary, battery powered cars from Kingussie High and a Scalextric set powered by an electric bike designed by Inverness High School.
