Struggle to fill top job at Golspie High School
Highland Council is struggling to find a replacement head teacher for a Sutherland secondary school, it appears.
The local authority is no closer to filling the key post at Golspie High School despite advertising it twice in recent months, it has emerged.
The need for a new head teacher arose following the departure in October of incumbent Mark Evans, who had held the top job for a number of years.
Mr Evans is said to have left the 263-pupil secondary school “for family reasons”.
Following his departure, the school’s depute head teacher, Catherine Brown, was appointed acting head teacher.

Highland Council then began actively recruiting for a new head teacher, placing an advert in MyJobScotland, the national jobs portal for Scotland’s public sector.
The council said it was looking for an “effective communicator who inspires and motivates others, judges wisely and decides appropriately, identifies and solves problems, and demonstrates political insight”.
According to the advert, the post comes with a salary of £76,206.
However, an enquiry by the Northern Times has revealed that the hunt for a new principal has so far been unsuccessful.
A spokesperson for Highland Council said: “Following on from advertising the head teacher post (twice) at Golspie High School, we are not in a position to proceed to final interview.”
The spokesperson continued: “Catherine Brown, depute head teacher at the school will continue as acting head teacher until the end of this school session, July 2025.
“This is to provide stability and continuity for the school community.
“Officers will continue to liaise with the chairperson of the Parent Council when the head teacher post is re-advertised.”
