‘Strictly’ inspires Bonar Bridge dance classes

THE BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing is once again back on our screens featuring more celebrities and new professional dancers strutting their stuff.

But have you ever thought about trying out some of the ballroom and Latin dances featured on the hit show?

The opportunity to do just this is open to you in Bonar Bridge Village Hall on Saturday, 12th October.

Caroline Coomber, a professional ballroom and Latin American teacher from Elgin will be leading four workshops teaching the basic steps of eight of these dances.

The programme includes: 11am to noon, waltz/foxtrot; noon to 1pm quickstep/tango, followed by a lunch break for which dancers are being asked to bring their own food and drinks, then 2pm-3pm cha-cha-cha/samba, and 3pm-4pm jive/paso doble.

Each workshop costs £5 a head or four for the price of three, at £15.

After the last workshop, around 5pm, there will be a buffet supper available to participants at £3 each and, following this, is an evening social dance featuring ballroom, Latin, ceilidh and fun dances.

Iain and Fiona Sneddon, one of Caroline’s competitive couples, will be doing Latin and ballroom demonstrations during the evening. The social dance is free to workshop participants and £5 a couple for anyone else who wishes to come along. It will start at 6.30pm.

Caroline runs sessions all over Moray, Inverness and Aberdeen (and most recently in Thurso) and teaches the complete beginner to competitors. As well as classes and workshops, she judges at competitions, provides training for medallists and competitors, private lessons and first dance lessons for wedding couples. She is a member of the United Kingdom Alliance of Professional Teachers of Dancing and the International Dance Teachers’ Association.

She said: "Ballroom and Latin dance is a fantastic activity to get involved in. It keeps you fit, it improves posture and strength, it increases confidence not only on the dance floor but in life as a whole, you meet lots of new friends and it can change your life!"

If this Bonar Bridge Day of Dance is successful, it could become a regular event with Caroline travelling up every few weeks recapping what has been taught and adding more to the routines.

Also there may be regular practice sessions where those interested can practice in preparation for Caroline’s next visit.

Booking for this event is essential – call 07842 400395 or e-mail athomson73@btinternet.com

The event is being run in partnership with the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust.
