All staff, customers and animals were safely evacuated as a blaze tore through a Sutherland veterinary practice today.

Rogart Vets is understood to have been completely gutted by a fire first reported at around 11.50 am.

Policer say there were no suspicious circumstances and confirmed nobody was harmed.

There were unconfirmed reports locally that the blaze started when an electric car caught fire, with a shed beside the vets’ building also ablaze.

A social media post by Rogart Vets earlier today read: “Due to a fire, the practice is closed.

“All patients and staff are safe, and emergency services are on scene. Thank you for your kind words and understanding during this difficult time.

“For emergencies only, please phone the practice number to be transferred to Easter Ross Vets.”

Six fire engine crews from Lairg, Dornoch, Invergordon, Dingwall and Inverness (two) were all involved.

Crews used breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and two ground monitors to fight the flames at the building close to the A839.

That A-road was closed to traffic for a period of time, but the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were able to leave the scene at 5.20 pm after extinguishing the last of it earlier in the afternoon.

Police Scotland confirmed a short time ago: “The A839 has reopened following a fire near Rogart earlier today, Friday, 16 May, 2025.

“Emergency services were called around 11.50am and no casualties were reported. There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

“Motorists and residents in the area are thanked for their patience during the incident.”

Shocked local residents and others familiar with the practice took to social media last night to express relief that nobody was harmed.

Cynth Duncan said: “Glad all animals and staff are safe - buildings can be rebuilt but what a shock for everyone.”

Cath Bruce said: “So glad all of you are safe and sound and all the animals too.”

Lucy Norval added: “So sad! It’s an awful thing to happen. Glad every living thing is okay.”
