There has been a spike in coronavirus cases in north and west Sutherland, an area which up until now has had few if any cases of the virus.

Public Health Scotland’s online dashboard shows there were nine confirmed Covid-19 cases in the “neighbourhood” in the seven days from January 6 to January 12.

The area has a population of 3260 and its seven day rate of cases per 100,000 population is calculated as 276.1, putting it in the dashboard’s ‘200 to 300’ category.

Sutherland North and West has previously been recorded as having 0-2 cases. This means there could have been zero, one or two positive cases in the area.

The number of coronavirus cases in South Sutherland is also on the rise with 11 recorded over the same seven day period, climbing from the three previous cases recorded.

Its seven day rate per 100,000 population is listed as 178.8, putting it in the '100-199' category.

However incidences of the virus in Sutherland East (population 4095) remain unchanged at 0-2 cases. The seven day rate is suppressed to help protect patient confidentiality.

Across the region there were 419 positive cases in the seven day period.
