Tributes have been paid on social media sites to well known Brora man George MacBeath, the Doll, who died at the Cambusavie unit of the Lawson Memorial Hospital, Golspie, yesterday morning. He was aged 87.

Individuals and organisations have posted fond messages on their Facebook pages in memory of George, who spent many years as the janitor at Brora Primary School.

Brora Salt Pans Research Group said he would be “sorely missed” and had touched the lives of many in so many ways.

The group’s post reads: “We will remember him as the friendly, caring and ever smiling janitor at Brora Primary School.

“George was a great help during the salt pans excavations and his spade and tractor were always at our disposal and he latterly looked after the stonework from the dig at his croft. We'll never forget our dear friend.”

The Friends of Clyne War Memorial, of which Mr MacBeath was a founder committee member, said he had been a “great friend” to the society.

Its post stated: “So many people will have had their lives touched by George. He will be sadly missed. A great stalwart and a great friend.”

Catherine Jack MacAngus of the annual Gar’s Tractor Run also put up a touching tributute, saying Mr MacBeath had been the run’s oldest tractor driver, a status he took “great pleasure in”.

She wrote: “He made us all proud with his witty remarks and always big cuddles - just a true gent who will leave a huge hole in the hearts of everyone who knew him.”

Individuals have also been remembering Mr MacBeath with Michael Gunn posting that he was a "fine gentleman" while Christopher P E Rickaby posted: "An amazing gentleman he gave my family and myself loads of kind help . A true saint . He will be in our hearts forever."
