Storm Eowyn is now expected to bring snow as well as winds of up to 80 mph to parts of the Highlands.

The Met Office has updated its weather warning for the northern area of Scotland with a yellow warning for snow on Friday morning now added to the previous gale alert.

Much of the UK is braced for the impact of a ‘weather bomb’ caused by an extremely fast jet stream and trough of low pressure closing in towards the end of this week.

Worst hit areas are likely to face damage to property and power lines, with some disruption to road, rail, air and ferry services expected.

But the Highlands has been so far spared the amber warning for wind affecting the central belt and parts of England.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Snow, for a time on Friday morning, may cause some disruption, before easing and/or turning to rain.

“Given the strong winds that will accompany the snow, temporary blizzard conditions are possible over higher ground, with some drifting also possible for a time.

“This is probably more likely north of the central belt.”
