Brora native Hetty Cunningham celebrated her 104th birthday at Mull Hall Care Home, Barbaraville, last Sunday.

A smiling Mrs Cunningham marked the milestone by donning a party hat, blowing out the candles on her cake and enjoying many phone calls from friends and family.

Her family could not be physically present because of the coronavirus pandemic, but virtually attended a celebration held by the home.

Daughter-in-law Kathleen Cunningham, who is married to Hetty’s son Jim, said: “We were there with her virtually. She is natural with being on screen and not in the least bit daunted by the camera.

“The only thing we missed was a hug, but that will come. The important thing now is that they all stay safe and well.

“Hetty is in the care of an amazing staff who go the extra mile to help keep us all as a family in touch and very much part of her daily life."

Hetty is part of a growing number of people in the UK whose age is in the three figures.

According to the Office for National Statistics, there were 13,330 people aged 100 years and over in 2019 - an increase of 11 per cent compared with 2018.
