Sale prices and verdict from today's sheep and cattle sale at Dingwall and Highlands Marts

DINGWALL and Highland Marts Ltd today sold 14 prime cattle and 857 prime sheep at their sale.

Prime bullocks (10) averaged 249.0p (-8.0p) and sold to 260.0p per kg for a 530kg Limousin cross from Ashley, North Kessock selling to Messrs John M Munro Ltd, Dingwall and £1,708.00 gross for a 700kg Limousin cross also from Ashley, North Kessock.

Prime heifers (4) averaged 247.6p (-10.3p) and sold to 251.0p per kg for a 645kg Limousin cross and 251.0p per kg and £1,681.70 gross for a 670kg Simmental cross both from The Cloy, Fortrose.

The verdict: "A plainer show of cattle forward sold at comparable rates on the week for type.”

The mart sold 857 prime sheep at their sale.

New season lambs (134) averaged 280.6p (+7.7p) and sold to 318.2p per kg for a pen of 44kg Texel crosses from Greenlands, Arabella and £145 gross for a pen of 54kg Texel crosses from Murrial Farm, Insch selling to Messrs John M Munro Ltd, Dingwall.

Old season lambs (342) averaged 286.2p (+21.1p) and sold to 312.8p per kg for a pen of 43kg Cheviots from Torgorm, Conon Bridge selling to Messrs John M Munro Ltd, Dingwall and £141 gross for a pen of 46kg Texel crosses also from Torgorm.

Feeding sheep (381) sold to £210 gross for a pair of Texel ewes from Cairnside, Watten.

The verdict: “A much larger show of spring lambs forward were slightly dearer on the week, however making them super heavy is definitely advantageous to one’s pocket. The standard weights are grossing the same as the heavies. Hogg trade continues to amaze us as the job was firmer once again. Standard and export weights were privy to the largest increase in values today and many more could have easily been sold. The bonanza trade theme in the prime sheep ring today continued to the ewe section as all classes were dearer on the week for more numbers sold.”
