The event, to be held from July 28-30, is the latest leading competition to be awarded to the famous Championship Course, one of the most historic links in the world.

The course is already preparing for the Men’s Home Internationals next year.

Club’s general manager, Neil Hampton said: “We are excited at the prospect of staging this major championship and are delighted the R&A has chosen Royal Dornoch for the event.

“It will add to a long list of distinguished competitions we have held here and will again showcase what golf in the Highlands of Scotland has to offer.”

Last year Royal Dornoch staged the Boys Home Internationals and previously hosted the Scottish Amateur Championship on three occasions and also The Amateur Championship, the Scottish Ladies Amateur Championship, Senior Ladies British Open Amateur Championship and Ladies Home Internationals, as well as the international Jacques Leglise Trophy.

The R&A Senior Amateur Championship has been played for annually since 1969.

The title holder is American Craig Davis who won at his first attempt after a play-off at North Berwick this year.
