Teacher Shelly Taylor has said it has been a "rollercoaster" year for Helmsdale Primary School.

"Post lockdown recovery and outdoor learning has been the order of the day," she said. "We've had a busy and successful end to the final term with lots of hard work behind the scenes."

End of term trips were out of the question so the school arranged for Ian Paterson of Go Wild Highlands to run outdoor activities with each class.

A very successful, socially distanced sports day took place with pupils rotating round various "stations" including hurdles, wellie tossing, an obstacle course and traditional races. Points were taken from each class and this year Castle house was the winner.

A farewell fun day was held for the P7s who are moving on to high school. The day comprised footgolf, a beach lunch, a water fight and slip n' slide. The P7s also managed a farewell dinner.

On their return to school pupils and staff are looking forward to the grand opening of their improved outdoor learning area for which funding has been ongoing.

A funding application to the Lord Leverhulme Trust for two polycrubs and outdoors suits for the nursery and infant classes, was successful.
