A DRIVER from Sutherland took to the wheel after consuming a huge amount of medication, a court heard.

Stuart Strang (37), Elphin, came to police attention after his vehicle swerved about the road as it crossed the Kessock Bridge, to the concern of other motorists.

He was parked in a lay-by and vomiting when officers caught up with him.

At Inverness Sheriff Court today, Elphin admitted driving while unfit through drugs on October 4, 2019.

Fiscal depute Rowena Carlton said Strang had been unsteady on his feet, his pupils were pinpricks and his speech was slurred.

He told officers he had consumed two boxes of Nurofen Plus containing 36 tablets each and had an addiction to them.

Defence solicitor Clare O’Hagen said her client had taken medication for anxiety and depression as well as Nurofen Plus.

He accepted he should not have been driving.

Strang was given a year’s road ban and a £480 fine.
