An author has launched a crowdfunder via Kickstarter to pay for the publication of his latest book.

Edward Hancox (39), from Shropshire, hopes to raise enough money to release Every Last Puffin, which celebrates the Puffin in the UK.

The seabird is now classed as endangered because of its continued population decline, although there are still around 450,000 in the UK.

Mr Hancox funded his previous work Iceland, Defrosted through a Kickstarter campaign.

He got the idea for his new book whilst rescuing puffin chicks, known as pufflings, on the Icelandic island of Heimaey. He decided to visit colonies across the country, from Shetland to the Isles of Scilly, to see them at first hand, and learn about the issues that the birds are facing.

Mr Hancox said: “This book is a journey to find the last strongholds of the most enigmatic birds in the United Kingdom. Every last puffin.

“It’s not all bad news. There has been some resurgence in numbers in places such as Lundy and the Shiant Isles.”

The crowdfunder lasts until June 1 and rewards include a copy of the book before it goes on general release. Visit www.kickstarter.com and search for Every Last Puffin.
