Dingwall Highland Marts Ltd yesterday sold 5623 breeding and store sheep.

Breeding ewes (4,087) averaged £83.51 and sold to £185 gross for a Cheviot ewe from Fleucharry, Dornoch.

Feeding ewes (685) averaged £63.12 and sold to £100 gross for a Zwartble ewe from Burnbank, Isle of Canna.

Gimmers (695) averaged £113.33 and sold to £165 gross for a pair of Zwartbles from Burnbank and for a pen of Texel crosses from Cambusmore Farming Co.

Rams and Feeding Sheep (53) sold to £380 gross for a Cheviot ram from National Trust of Scotland, Isle of Canna.

Lambs (103) sold to £78 gross from Culnacraig, Achiltibuie.

The verdict: “The second major sale of Cheviot breeding sheep saw the best character lots of correct ewes destined for pure breeding were very dear and well short of buyers' requirements. Ewes that have had a harder summer on the north's rough terrain met a firm enquiry and sold at increased rates on the year. Gimmers cashed in at comparable rate to those witnessed at the last sale but anything lacking size just realised feeding ewe value.”
