Predicted increase in visitor numbers when Covid lockdown restrictions ease leads to move by Highland Council to fill fresh seasonal jobs

AN expected surge in visitor numbers have sparked the creation of 18 seasonal rangers and waste management jobs to help the Highlands cope with the post-lockdown influx.

Highland Council has advertised for ten seasonal access rangers and eight seasonal waste management staff to assist with the management of visitors to the area over the summer months. When lockdown restrictions eased last summer, the region saw a record surge in domestic travel and a similar trend is expected in 2021.

The jobs are part of a wider visitor management plan which the council agreed recently.

"The Access Rangers will have an important role acting as the eyes and ears for various council services and will work closely with other organisations, landowners and local communities," said a council spokesman. "The job will cover sites owned and/or managed by the council and other partners, to promote the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and to contribute to the Visitor Management Plan in response to the expected high visitor pressure as we emerge from the Covid 19 lockdown.

"The rangers will be working with visitors and residents providing advice and doing all they can encourage responsible outdoor access. They will cover Skye, Lochaber, SW Ross & Lochalsh, NW Ross, NW Sutherland, Caithness, E Sutherland & Ross and the Inner Moray Firth.

"The eight seasonal waste management staff will be employed to enhance the cleanliness standard of popular tourism areas of Highland. Their duties will ensure litter bins are emptied more frequently and the hotspot areas are kept clear of litter and refuse as much as possible.
