Figures show that the total amount paid out to energy companies to switch off turbines in the far north to help balance the grid is around £73 million and counting.
Firms have been paid £64 million to stop the blades spinning in Sutherland, and nearly £9 million in Caithness since the constraints payments system began in 2010.
Campaigners say this is evidence that no more new turbines are needed, as the existing ones already provide an excess of energy that the national grid cannot handle.
