POLICE in the Highlands have pledged to continue patrols of one of the most high-profile routes in the country.

Road policing unit officers in the Highlands carried out what they called "high-visibility motorcycle patrols" across the North Coast 500 route over the weekend.

The route has attracted a lot of attention as coronavirus restrictions have eased because of the number of visitors attracted to the region after lockdown and increased usage by locals.

Inspector Donnie Mackinnon from the Highlands and Islands Road Policing Unit said: "We are committed to reducing casualties and influencing driver behaviour across our road network and these dedicated patrols provide a visible presence on our roads and reassurance to our communities.

"We aim to interact with all types of road users and carry out the necessary enforcement in order to promote safe and responsible driving in the Highlands and Islands."
