PICTURES: ‘Keenly contested’ events at Durness Highland Gathering with £6,000 in prize money handed out on the day

The 2024 Durness Highland Gathering on Friday, June 26, was yet again a great success with around 1400 visitors through the gates, writes Andy Walker, of the Gathering committee.

Although the traditional heavyweight events this year had only a few 'professional' competitors due to the SHGA World Championships taking place in Halkirk the following day, it was well contested by both the pros that were attending and the local entrants.

All other events were keenly contested with the ladies 'throw the welly' taking almost 90 minutes to complete due to the number of entries.

Almost £6000 in prize money was given out on the day. The weather played ball all day to give us a dry games although a strong south westerly kept a lot of people off the hill, our traditional viewing area.
