AN inaugural memorial golf day in Easter Ross has teed up a charity boost and helped remember a much-loved local man.

The Alan Ross Memorial Golf Day was in tribute to the Tain man who passed away last October after a short battle with cancer.

It is the latest in a series of events which have already raised substantial sums for charity.

Alan was diagnosed with terminal cancer in March that year and his life-long friend Jim Oliver helped set up a Friends of Alan Ross Fundraiser at Tain's Platform 1864 restaurant which raised £19,000 with ongoing donations taking this total to more than £20,000.

A total of 25 teams of four entered the competition at Alan's home course at Tain. Tain Golf Club and resident pro Stuart Morrison "were brilliant hosts", said Mr Oliver, and gave the Friends of Alan Ross a fantastic deal.

He said: "The course was in great condition and our thanks go to the greenkeepers. Each hole was sponsored to help with the fundraising and companies and individuals from throughout the north were happy to help. We were oversubscribed for hole sponsors and some of them became trophy sponsors or food and drink sponsors. There were many bottles of the local Glenmorangie tipple at several holes as Alan's memory was well and truly toasted. It was such a good day that it was the Monday before we all knew what the winning score was!"
