A FUNDRAISING Dornoch couple have completed the Maggie’s 500 Cycle Challenge, so far raising around £9,250 for Maggie’s Highland.

Stuart and Marjory Grant were among 40 cyclists to take part in the gruelling challenge with an overall goal of raising £150,000.

The initiative involved cycling 500 miles over five days earlier this month with the rides taking place in the mountainous Cairngorms National Park and included demanding ascents of Glenshee, the Lecht and Cairngorms ski centres.

Cyclists averaged 100 miles per day and the most challenging day was a 104-mile circuit of the national park with more than 8,000 feet of climbing over the two highest roads in the UK.

However, the Grants, who are veteran cyclists and who have undertaken various, equally testing challenges in the past, took it in their stride.

Mr Grant thanked everyone who had sponsored and supported the couple in various different ways.

He said: “So far our fundraising stands at £9,250 and we would love to reach £10,000.

“If you would like to help us, we have some raffles running in the shop (Grants of Dornoch) or go to our Justgiving page.

Maggie’s Highlands, located in the grounds of Raigmore Hospital, Inverness, costs £500,000 a year to run and relies solely on voluntary donations to deliver its programme of support to families affected by cancer.

A spokesman said: “On Friday, September 10, our amazing 40 cyclists completed their incredible challenge. Thank you to every single person who has donated to their fundraising pages and helped along the way. Your support means the absolute world to everyone involved.”
