Rail services on the Far North Line were facing disruption on Tuesday after at least three cancellations - including one that was due to "passengers causing a disturbance".

The 12.34pm Wick to Inverness train, which was due into the Highland capital at 5.08pm, was cancelled this afternoon, with ScotRail confirming on its website that it was " because of passengers causing a disturbance on this train".

The exact nature of the disturbance was not known at the time of writing.

A ScotRail spokesperson said Police Scotland attended the scene at Wick and that replacement transport has been sourced for other passengers affected by the cancellation.

Phil Campbell, ScotRail Customer Operations Director, said: “We’re sorry to customers who experienced disruption to their journey as a result of this incident. Anyone delayed by 30 minutes or more is entitled to claim compensation through our Delay Repay Guarantee.”

Police Scotland and the British Transport Police have both been approached for comment.

Two other journeys were also cancelled on the line on Tuesday afternoon, although these were the result of "train faults" rather than any disturbance.

Those services were the 12.45pm Dingwall to Inverness and the 2pm Inverness to Wick trains.

Bus replacements have been sourced for the latter cancelled service.

A ScotRail spokesperson said: "We have managed to source a replacement coaches operated by Kineil & MacNeils coaches for this cancelled train.

“Due to the use of road transport your journey time will be extended and we apologise for the disruption to you journey on this route."

There was no immediate word on whether there might be any other cancellations on top of the three already confirmed due to the 12.34pm Wick-Inverness train now being out of position on the network, but all other services were showing as running at the time of writing. However, passengers should check before travel for updates at www.sctorail.co.uk.
