Pablo the peacock – an accomplished escape artist – makes an appearance on tonight's episode of The Highland Vet

Local vets are once again kept busy during the latest episode in the brand new series of The Highland Vet, which looks set to be full of drama.

Practice director Guy Gordon has a complex surgery to perform, on a much loved, elderly cat – 13-year-old Scratchy has an overactive thyroid and a serious heart condition.

A potentially life-saving course of chemotherapy six hours away in Glasgow has been cancelled at the last minute because of her deteriorating heart condition. Owner Julie, who moved to Caithness from the Midlands, knows high risk emergency surgery with Guy is now her only option.

At least one of Scratchy’s two thyroid glands needs removing, but her cardiac condition means she might not pull through.

Practice director Ken Wilson is called to a farm where a cow is struggling to give birth to twins – which are extremely rare in cattle. Only one in two hundred cows will have them. It’s a race against time for Ken to deliver her calves.

Vet Ewan Penny faces a real eye sore, when farmer Caitlin, who’s only 18-years-old, needs help with a 10-day-old lamb with in-turned eyelids.

Another young vet, Katie Reiss, is baffled as to what the problem could be when two poorly puppies make an appearance.

And vet Shondie McLean has a flighty patient to contend with. She quickly learns that Pablo the peacock is an accomplished escape artist. When she does manage to contain the bird, Shondie has to lance a nasty abscess on his face, which is full of pus – one of her favourite jobs.
