Around 1300 residents in north west Sutherland were affected by a power cut earlier this morning.

It occurred at around 9.45am and was mainly in the IV27 area.

SSE engineers worked quickly to try and get the power back on and about 900 customers had their electricity supply restored by 11.30am.

However 400 consumers in the Melvich area are still without power but an SSE spokesman said it was hoped that it could be restored by 1pm today.

He said engineers could find no initial reason for the outage but they will be looking into the circumstances over the next few days.

He added: "We apologise to customers affected by this power cut and assure them that we are doing all we can to get the supply restored as quickly and safely as possible."
