Local volunteers and staff of community organisations are being given the chance to take part in fully funded online training in food hygiene.

The Food Hygiene Heroes scheme is the latest opportunity from the North Highlands and Islands Climate Hub which supports communities to take climate action.

The Scottish Government funded project launched in September 2021, and offers advice and support to communities to help them create and implement sustainability goals. The Hub benefits communities in a number of ways while supporting national net zero aspirations.

The scheme offers individual volunteers and staff of community organisations the opportunity of fully funded training for a Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene for Catering qualification should they work on a project which aims to combat food waste.

North Highlands and Islands Climate Hub project manager Joan Lawrie said: "When talking with established and emerging community groups about their aspirations to develop projects which combat food waste, it became clear that food hygiene training would be a huge benefit. Not just for the projects, to allow them to operate safely and responsibly but to those volunteering and working on them.

"This course is industry recognised meaning those who complete it can add it to their CV to boost employability if that’s something they’re looking for. I can’t wait to support people to achieve this qualification, the benefits are so significant to community groups and their projects and to the individuals taking part.

"It’s incredible to be able to reward volunteers and staff with something that supports personal growth."

The funded opportunity allows community food waste projects to benefit from volunteers and staff who are specifically trained in food safety meaning community larders and fridges are better equipped to support their communities in a safe and dignified manner.

The scheme asks individuals to sign up online via the Hub’s website – https://www.nhclimatehub.co.uk/food-hygiene-heroes – and identify which community group they volunteer/work with.

Once an application is received, the Hub team will verify the individuals work with the named community group and the specific food waste project and arrange access to the training.

The training is delivered online and can be completed in the individuals own time within a 90 day period. The Hub commits to work with community groups to remove barriers to individuals accessing and completing the training.

Groups are encouraged to circulate the information with their staff and volunteer teams and are welcome to contact the Hub direct for more information and support.
