As with so many other events, the coronavirus pandemic put paid to the much loved children’s Christmas party at Bettyhill.

But there was some compensation and much excitement for the village’s younger generation when Santa and his helpers dropped by the north coast last weekend.

The red-suited, white bearded one toured the area in some style, in a present-packed wooden sled, with snowflakes painted on the side and a golden reindeer standing next to it.

An onlooker said: “Santa dispensed gifts at every stop between Invernaver and Kirtomy. He was last seen disappeared into the hills beyond but not before pausing for a brief photo shoot.”

At the other end of the age spectrum, some 63 pensioners were treated to Christmas lunch prepared by the Clachan Cafe.

The meals were delivered to all points of the compass by numerous volunteer drivers.

Jim Johnston, secretary of Bettyhill, Strathnaver amd Altnaharra Community Council, said: “The Christmas Lunch was initiated by the community council and financed by the Bettyhill Renewable Community Fund

“It was much enjoyed and appreciated by all recipients.”
