‘No final decision’ taken over reopening of South Bonar public toilets

Highland Council has said that no decision has been taken to reopen the South Bonar public conveniences, which were closed following a vandalism attack last year.

The boarded-up toilets are located near the Bonar Bridge in a green space known locally as ‘Stonehenge’, which includes a picnic area and a 16-space car park.

The toilets at South Bonar have been boarded up to protect against further vandalism. The nearest public convenience can be found at Ardgay.

A spokesperson for the local authority said the facility had “unfortunately been closed since December 28 due to significant ongoing vandalism and arson.”

Repair work had been completed, and a deep clean would be required before the block could be reopened.

The spokesperson added: “The facilities have been boarded up to protect against further vandalism, and no final decision has yet been made with regards to a potential reopening.

“The nearest public convenience can be found at Ardgay, around one mile from Bonar Bridge.”

The Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust had hoped to provide serviced overnight parking for motorhomes and a camping site at South Bonar. However, this plan was scuppered by SEPA’s concerns about a one in a 1000 year flood risk.
